  • 4.

Cuts your commute time by 25% and how much you pay for parking or Uber by 100%.

  • 5.

Fits most bikes & adult trikes. Minimalist design gives hidden super powers appeal (folks can't tell its an e-bike).

Electric Bike Kits

  • Why are Hilltopper Bikes 1/2 the price of other e-bikes on the market? Because we sell direct to you, the customer. Our mission is to create a sustainable future, two wheels at a time and we do that by making e-bikes affordable for you. We intentionally don't sell through dealers, distributors, or retailers because that way of selling means a higher price tag for you. We build our kits and bike wheels with love and care here in Seattle and sell direct to you, so you won't see the large retail markup that would be present if you were buying from a third party. That way you're always getting the best deal on your electric bike.

  • It depends on how fast you want to go, and how steep the hill.

The 36v, 350 watt kits and bikes can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is the legal limit in most of the US for e-bikes so it's enough power for most bikes. This is a great power for steeper hills, faster commutes & carrying bigger loads. It's like having two Soul Cycle instructors also pedaling for you.

The 24v, 250 watt kits and bikes can go 15 mph with minimal pedaling on flat ground, but they perform best as a boost to your pedaling with pedaling required on hills. Perfect if you are looking for an added boost to your ride at an affordable price. Cuts your commute time by 25%, flattens out that hill by 50% & puts a smile on your face.

The 48v, 750 watt Summit kit can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is the legal limit in most of the US for e-bikes. The motor could go faster, but it is limited at 20 mph for safety and to remain street legal in the US (unlimited it could go 30+ mph). The 750 watt motor can carry large loads up steep hills and accelerates quickly. Perfect if you are looking to cruise consistently at 20 mph over varied terrain or climb absurdly steep and long hills while hauling groceries. It's more power then you might need. But its a lot of fun and gives you the piece of mind that you can accelerate out of any sticky situation.

  • All Hilltopper electric bikes and kits have a maximum speed of 20 mph. This keeps them street legal and compliant with state laws and city ordinances in the US.

For choosing a power system, here's what to keep in mind:

The 36v, 350 watt kits (Ranger & Horizon) can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is great for steeper hills, faster commutes & carrying bigger loads.

The 24v, 250 watt kits (Sprinter & Commuter) can go 15 mph with minimal pedaling on flat ground, but they perform best as a boost to your pedaling with pedaling required on hills. Perfect if you are looking for an added boost to your ride at an affordable price. Cuts your commute time by 25%, gives a boost up hills & puts a smile on your face.

  • There are many different types of bicycles and adult tricycles in the world today, but each Hilltopper conversion kit has been carefully designed to fit as many of these models as possible. All Hilltopper wheels are designed to be compatible with both rim brakes and disc brakes.

There are a few more factors used to confirm that the Hilltopper will fit your bike. 1) Wheel Size. 2) Hub and Fork spacing. 3) Fork Dropout Type. See FAQ Will It Fit My Bike? for more information.

  • For our conversion kits, and on some of our bikes, we offer two methods for controlling the motor manually, the GripSwitch, or an Adjustable Speed Throttle. Both serve the same purpose, but go about it differently and offer different installation options.

    The GripSwitch:

    • Easiest possible installation ever conceived. Just strap the Velcro where ever you like on your handle bars. This means it can go on the right-hand or left, top or bottom, middle or end. Many people place it to be pushed by thumb, others like to set it as a trigger under their index finger. The possibilities are nearly endless and the choice is yours.
    • Compatible with absolutely any handlebars.
    • Controlling the motor is equally simple. Since it is a button, it's just on or off. Just hold the button when you want a boost, release when you don't. We have fine tuned the motor controller to conserve energy, minimizing wasted power to keeps you rolling longer.
    • Only available with our 24V electric conversion kits and bikes.

    Adjustable Speed Throttle:

    • Controlling the motor work just like a gas pedal in a car. Push it all the way for max speed, push it just a little for lower speeds. This means that just like in a car, you are in total control of your speed, but also means the more aggressive you "drive" the less "gas" mileage you may get on a full charge.
    • Installing the throttle is a little harder than the GripSwitch, but still pretty simple. It does require that you remove your handle bar grip first.
    • When considering the Throttle option, keep in mind that it has a maximum clamp diameter of 22.2 mm. This means there can be complications installing it on drop bars for handle bars with a larger diameter.
    • Not compatible with our 24V conversion kits or electric bikes.
    • For all returns or warranty claims contact support@hilltopperbikes.com or 1 800 805 9053 x 2.
    • 30-day money back guarantee. Returns of undamaged conversion kits may be issued full refunds less a $50.00 restocking fee. Returns of undamaged complete bikes may be issued full refunds less a $125.00 restocking fee.
    • Warranty only applies to original owner (non-transferable).
    • 1-year standard warranty on all batteries. 2-year standard warranty on all other components.
    • Warranties can be used for an exchange of a component only once.
    • Customer pays return shipping on warrantied component inspections. Please note some battery returns may require special documentation and packaging, and these instances will encounter extra fees. This is in order to correctly comply with lithium battery shipping regulations. For all return shipping we recommend using a local shipping service like FedEx office or the UPS Store.
    • If you have a quality issue with a product please contact support to help diagnose the problem. If a product does not meet our high quality standards, then we will issue you a replacement component or fix the original at no additional cost. • The 36 V Hilltopper electric bike conversion kit is a step up from our original systems both in tech and performance. The bigger motor offers more power while the Horizon battery give you more miles on the road and the new throttle offers a bit more control.

Here are the basic steps you'll need to follow:

    1. Remove your bike's original front wheel.
    2. Install your new Electric Bike Wheel, being careful to ensure all of the axle hardware is in place.
    3. Unlock and remove the battery from the mount.
    4. Affix the battery mount to your bike's water bottle mount or a rear carrier, then reattach the battery.
    5. Remove your your handle bar grip. (You can choose right-hand or left, it's totally up to you.)
    6. Install the throttle on the handle bars. (It can be position any way you like, push forward, pull back, right-hand or left. It's dealer's choice.)
    7. Connect it all with the two plugs at the ends of your Cable Set.

For more detailed instructions, check out the booklet that came with your kit or download the PDF by clicking here.

  • The 24 V Hilltopper electric bike conversion kit is our flagship model, the one that stated it all. We've refined it over the years, but the core principle remains the same; Simplicity. And that's exactly what you'll find here. No bells and whistles, just what you need, this keeps you bike clean and installation a breeze.

There are five simple steps to installation:

    1. Remove your bike's original front wheel.
    2. Install your new Electric Bike Wheel, being careful to ensure all of the axle hardware is in place.
    3. Strap on the Battery Pack where ever you see fit.
    4. Using velcro, place the GripSwitch button on your handle bars where ever comfortable.
    5. Connect it all with the two plugs on your Cable Set.

For more detailed instructions, check out the booklet that came with your kit or download the PDF by clicking here.

  • For information on storing you battery, please hop over to FAQ When Should I Charge My Battery?

  • You can charge your HillTopper whenever you like! All of our batteries are smart batteries with no memory affect, so there is no need to drain it fully before recharging like you would with older battery types like NiCad or others.

Generally we suggest simply charging it after every ride, or at the end of the day if you are a regular commuter. That way you always know your battery is ready to go when you are.

If you are putting the bike away for the winter or just know you won't use it for some time, we suggest charging it fully first and storing it in doors. For the absolute best life of your battery we would also suggest plugging it back into the charger every month or so to keep it topped up. Before you ask, no, unfortunately we cannot suggest simply leaving the battery plugged into the charger long term.

  • For all of our electric bikes and conversion kits we've made sure charging is easy as can be. Just a few simple steps:

    1. Grab the charger supplied with your HillTopper and plug it into the wall. For the best possible performance we recommend plugging directly into the wall, avoiding the use of extension cords and power strips whenever possible.
    2. Once the green light on the charger comes on, go ahead and plug the barrel end into the battery.
    3. When the charger is connected to the battery the light should turn from green to red to indicate that it is filling up the battery.
    4. As soon as the battery is full the light will turn back to green so you know it's done.

That's it! Follow these steps and you can rest assured you'll be ready to roll!

Range of the Battery and Speed

  • Sprinter battery has 12 to 16 miles of range.

Commuter battery has 20 miles + of range.

Ranger battery has 20 to 25+ miles of range.

Horizon battery has 25 - 40+ miles of range.

Summit battery has 25 - 40+ miles of range.

Mileage rates are based on a 170 pound rider on a 30 pound bike on a flat paved surface, with no wind, using the motor and not pedaling. Your mileage may vary, though most people get more than advertised mileage. For the best possible mileage we suggest pedaling anytime the motor is engaged.

The motor could go faster, but it is limited at 20 mph for safety and to remain street legal in the US (unlimited it could go 30+ mph). Will It Fit My Bike?

  • There are many different types of bicycles and adult tricycles in the world today, but each Hilltopper conversion kit has been carefully designed to fit as many of these models as possible. All Hilltopper wheels are designed to be compatible with both rim brakes and disc brakes.

There are a few more factors used to confirm that the Hilltopper will fit your bike. 1) Wheel Size. 2) Hub and Fork spacing. 3) Fork Dropout Type. See FAQ Will It Fit My Bike? for more information.

  • The type of drop out your bike has is very important. The dropout is the place at the end of your fork where the wheel attaches to the rest of the bike.

For the longest time there was really only one type available; the "open" or "slotted" type. This is the familiar U shape you have likely seen on most every bike you can remember. Your bike must have this type for our electric bike conversion kits to fit.

Another type of dropout that is found on a small number of high-end bikes is the "closed" dropout. This is for use only with "thru-axle" hubs, and our e-bike motors are unfortunately not compatible.

  • Our hubs have a 100 mm(or about 3.9 inches) axle, which is standard for most bikes. To confirm that our electric bike hub will fit into the fork on your bike we need to check the spacing of "the fork." The fork is the two metal arms that hold either side of your front wheel. If there is about 3.9" (100mm) the Hill Topper should fit great!

Since our electric bike motors tend to be a bit taller than the average bike hub, there is another fork spacing consideration to look for. Most bike hubs are only about 2-3" in diameter, but an e-bike motor can be up to 7" tall. As such, we need to ensure that the 4" spacing mentioned above does not diminish too quickly above the dropout. For the best possible fit, that 100mm/4" spacing should be maintained at least 3" above the dropout.

  • We offer all of the most common wheel sizes on the market today, including; 700c/29", 26", 24", and 20" wheels.

You can find your wheel size printed on the side of the tire on your existing wheel.

Love this product. I live in New York city and every time I go out with my bike, everyone is amazed at the aesthetic and performance of my bike. I love racing the delivery guys downtown.

a light weight front hub motor is the perfect solution for those that don’t want their bicycle to look or feel like an electric bike. The 24 volt system is plenty powerful enough to assist a person up the average hill. Sure, It won’t pull you up without helping it by pedaling some, but isn’t exercise the main reason we ride our bicycles, otherwise, we would just get a motorcycle. Having a hub motor also is a safety tool, especially for those that are getting a little older and not quite as agile as they once were. I often find myself struggling a bit to get back in the saddle and pedaling across a busy intersection, especially if it is slightly uphill. How nice to press that hub motor button and get that extra boost to get safely across with or without pedaling. Pedal Assist bicycle have a disadvantage for this feature, because you often don’t have that power-on-demand button that hilltopper’s system provides. I love my hub wheels. I have one on all of my bikes, and I have 3. So little weight, almost invisible, but enough power to make bicycling fun, without taking away the exercise factor.

Charles Elms

Deducted one point because the hilltopper staff forgot to pack the instructions on which way to mount the front wheel in my box. Went online to their website and found how. The rest was super simple.

GRAHAME

On the positive side the Hilltopper is quality made and does what it is supposed to do. In terms of improvement I would suggest a switch/lever instead of a button. I have big hills where I live and keeping a thumb on the button is tedious.

If the battery could be made a bit slimmer to avoid winter leggings catching on it that would be good.

Could the downhill not be used to charge battery? That would be fantastic!

James Kazmierski

High quality on off throttle electric bike kit. High quality from the factory. Wife likes it.

Raymond

It’s exactly what I wanted. A compact simple system. Perfect ! Much recommended.

Dennis

I had one hilltopper for a few years on my wife’s bike , and it worked out well for her and she loves it. Since i ride more then her i decided to bay a hilltopper for my bike and we were sharing the battery. also worked out well if we both went she would use and i would just ride without. Finely the battery wore out . So we ordered a new battery ,we had some connection issues between the old cables and the new battery , But thes customer service techs are Great they worked with me to get things working and replaced the new battery and cable , and got me working ,couldn’t be happier. I just need to get one more cable so we can share the battery again. Thanks for a Great product. Dennis Cray. Kinston NC

I have had kit since 2013, ride on hilly terrain 6 to 15 miles about 14 days a month (except during months of November – March), I just love it! In my experience, You can’t beat the price, quality or customer support. I did end up getting a steel fork as they recommend- there is enough torque on the 250 W motor to bend an aluminum fork.

Ralph Brown

The parts came complete, no damage to anything. Just pay attention to instructions for direction of rotation. Went together with no problems. Inflated tire and charged the battery and off we go. Got it for fiancé who had polio as a baby and now we can bike together and both get exercise .
