Discover the Road Less Traveled

An Electric Gravel Bike Built for Adventure

Whatever riding you like to do, be it city streets, or gravel farm roads, the Discover will get you there and back in comfort and style. We designed the Discover to be lightweight and maintenance friendly. The drivetrain is a 1 x 9 system that eliminates the front derailleur while giving you a wide range of gears in back for tackling the hills. And our 36V 350W rear hub motor with built-in torque sensor will give you all the assist you need. We also made sure the Discover has all the attachment points you need to outfit your bike with fenders, lights, racks, bags, and water bottles of your choosing. We are even providing a front rack to get you started.

What is the Difference Between a Gravel Bike and a Road Bike?

The Discover rides the middle path between the mountains and the road

Simply said, a gravel bike is a combination of a road bike (happy on smooth pavement) and a mountain bike (happy playing rough and tumble in the mud). Mellow single tracks, farm roads, gravel, crushed cobblestones, pot holed city streets, tarmac — whatever. The Discover is a machine that's capable of performing on various surfaces while sustaining comfort. For us here at Hilltopper we see the Discover as the perfect bike for those who love to ride and want one bike for all their adventures. To unite their passions, and discover new ones.

Cutting Edge Technology Meets Minimalist Design

Low-maintenance & High Performance Drivetrain

Integral to the performance of the bike, the Discover boasts a modern 1 x 9 drivetrain system. The Microshift Advent system has an advanced, smooth shifting rear derailleur with an innovative design. The 9 speed cassette has a wide ratio, 11-42T, allowing you to find the right gear for the right terrain. The Advent shifter great feel and precise shifts. The entire system is designed from the ground up by Microshift to be user friendly and maintenance light to keep you on the road and riding.

Powerful & Compact Electric Motor

Discover your hidden super powers, one pedal stroke at a time

At the center of things is the Hilltopper Discover 36V 350W rear hub electric motor. Small & compact with a high torque to size ratio, this motor provides a sustained 20 mph cruising speed and higher with pedaling. The torque is roughly equal to two soul cycle instructor's combined pedal power. The rear motor also has a built in torque sensor for smoother, instant, and reliable power transmission with every pedal stroke. Hilltopper motors are legendary for their long lifespan and are maintenance free.

The power to go further, play harder, last longer

Battery range of 30 - 55 miles in a sleek, integrated design

Powering the motor is an advanced 11.4Ah lithium battery. The battery is integrated into the down tube for a sleek design and low weight distribution for better handling. It is easily removed for charging and the keyed lock keeps it safe and sound on your daily errands.

You're in control

We have you covered even if your legs get tired

Throttle or pedal assist? We designed the Discover to have both so you don't have to choose. The PAS (pedal assist system), which uses the built-in torque sensor in the motor, gives you power with each pedal stroke. Choose 1 of 4 levels assist to get you where you need to go. And hey, if the legs can't make it up that hill or you need to quickly accelerate through the intersection, the throttle is there to give you a hand. How fast are you going? What is your battery life? The small sleek LCD screen gives you all the information you need to explore that next bend with peace of mind.

Choose Your Size

Designed for Comfort and Performance

We want to make sure everyone is able to ride that is why we built the Discover in three sizes. The small frame is a step through that comfortably fits men and women 4'10 to 5'8. As a step through it is also good for people new to cycling, or enjoy a little more comfort getting on an off their bike. The medium frame comfortably fits men and women 5'2 to 5'8. The large frame comfortably fits men and women 5'8 - 6'5 and over. With an adjustable saddle, and seat post the Discover easily accommodates many body sizes and riding styles. At 44 lbs the Discover is also one of the lightest e-bikes on the market, making it easier for everyone to carry up stairs, load onto a bus or train, or lift onto a car rack.

  • Simply said, a gravel bike is a combination of a road bike (happy on smooth pavement) and a mountain bike (happy playing rough and tumble in the mud). Mellow single tracks, farm roads, gravel, crushed cobblestones, rough city streets, tarmac — whatever. A gravel bike is a machine that's capable of performing on various surfaces, while sustaining comfort.

Gravel bikes like the Discover have 650b wheels with wider tires that run at a lower pressure, a slightly more upright posture, and thicker forks that can handle rougher roads. These small changes give a road bike like performance with more comfortable riding on un-paved roads. Gravel bikes like the Discover also have braze-ons (holes for screws) for connecting front and rear racks, and are a popular choice for road cyclist on long rides, bike messengers, urban commuting with bags or kids, bike camping, and long distance touring.

It is important to note that a gravel bike is NOT a mountain bike and does not have shocks and cannot take jumps, or big drops. It is still a road bike and intended for on-road use. The definition of what it means to be "on-road" is just much broader then your typical road bike, giving you the freedom to explore some wild and beautiful places.

  • Why are Hilltopper Bikes 1/2 the price of other e-bikes on the market? Because we sell direct to you, the customer. Our mission is to create a sustainable future, two wheels at a time and we do that by making e-bikes affordable for you. We intentionally don't sell through dealers, distributors, or retailers because that way of selling means a higher price tag for you. We build our kits and bike wheels with love and care here in Seattle and sell direct to you, so you won't see the large retail markup that would be present if you were buying from a third party. That way you're always getting the best deal on your electric bike.

  • It depends on how fast you want to go, and how steep the hill.

The 36v, 350 watt kits and bikes can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is the legal limit in most of the US for e-bikes so it's enough power for most bikes. This is a great power for steeper hills, faster commutes & carrying bigger loads. It's like having two Soul Cycle instructors also pedaling for you.

The 36v, 250 watt Sprinter kit can go 16 mph with minimal pedaling on flat ground, but they perform best as a boost to your pedaling with pedaling required on hills. Perfect if you are looking for an added boost to your ride at an affordable price. Cuts your commute time by 25%, flattens out that hill by 50% & puts a smile on your face.

The 48v, 750 watt Summit kit can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is the legal limit in most of the US for e-bikes. The motor could go faster, but it is limited at 20 mph for safety and to remain street legal in the US (unlimited it could go 30+ mph). The 750 watt motor can carry large loads up steep hills and accelerates quickly. Perfect if you are looking to cruise consistently at 20 mph over varied terrain or climb absurdly steep and long hills while hauling groceries. It's more power then you might need. But its a lot of fun and gives you the piece of mind that you can accelerate out of any sticky situation.

  • All Hilltopper electric bikes and kits have a maximum speed of 20 mph. This keeps them street legal and compliant with state laws and city ordinances in the US.

For choosing a power system, here's what to keep in mind:

The 36v, 350 watt kits (Horizon) can go 20 mph with minimal pedaling. This is great for steeper hills, faster commutes & carrying bigger loads.

The 36v, 250 watt kits (Sprinter) can go 15 mph with minimal pedaling on flat ground, but they perform best as a boost to your pedaling with pedaling required on hills. Perfect if you are looking for an added boost to your ride at an affordable price. Cuts your commute time by 25%, gives a boost up hills & puts a smile on your face.

After assembly, I initially had a rubbing brake caliper and took the bike to a local bike shop to have that resolved as well as install some SPD clip pedals that improved my comfort on the bike. Although I assembled the bike with ease, I am a novice about bicycle mechanics and should have engaged my usual bike shop to assemble it from the start. They gave the bike a complete tune up for less than $100 and the performance was greatly improved. – I rode the bike on a local paved bike trail loop that was 31 miles. Using “level 2 assist”, I covered the trip in 40 minutes faster time than I did when I was fitter and younger a few years ago. The Hilltopper LE Gravel Bike has extended my years of bicycling activity.

Chris Harding

The bike is awesome. My experience behind the handlebars is marked by a constant grin. Cheers!

Daniel M.

love everything about it. hard not to ride with a big smail on your face!

Have been having a blast on my new Discover. Been mostly riding on streets for my commute and the bike has handled great. Setup was simple and everything arrived in working order after two days! Total game changer as far as getting out of my car and riding a lot more. Friends are all jealous.

Paul Bourassa

We purchased and recently received two Discover E-Bikes and are really impressed with the quality and performance. My wife and I are casual riders and purchased these bikes since they checked all the boxes on our list. The list included the following: small bike frame option, standover height of 30” or less, 40 lbs or less to fit on lightweight bike rack (with battery removed), hybrid wider tires for gravel, quiet 350W rear hub motor, at least 9 speed derailer, disc brakes, pedal assist and throttle up to 20 MPH, and under $2000. And the bike had to look cool. The Discover was the only bike we could find that delivered all this.
The bikes are well built and easy to assemble. The only issue I had was with one of the batteries coming loose and turning off the LCD after a minute of riding, but adding a 1 inch Velcro cinch strap around it to secure it to the frame resolved the problem.
Also, my wife is only 5′ 1″ tall and it would be nice to have a standover height of 28″ or less for her but she is adapting.
We have done many rides over the past 3 months and love the ride and feel of the bikes. Congratulations to Hilltopper on a job well done.

Now I can pedal up the hill I live on! Thanks!

Dan B.

Love this ride. The bike was easy to assemble using the online directions. Build quality is generally good but I’d prefer beefier bolts that hold the handlebar. The handlebar grips are too thin and could use an upgrade to what Rad supplies on their bikes. First ride- wow! I really like the torque sensing from a little extra pressure in the pedals. Shifting is smooth and well spaced. Bike is very light and the slimmer battery gives it a stealth look without taking much off the range. The lcd display is so small that it’s hard to read at speed but after a while you get to know what level of pedal assist you have and shifting the gears give you more or less power. After 35 miles I only used a bar off the battery. Ride is a little stiff without front shocks but I’d rather keep the bike at this price instead of adding shocks or a larger lcd. It handles beautifully. Top speed is limited on assist to 20 mph but you can roll faster than that without the hub motor holding you back Very responsive on pavement or gravel. Overall, very pleased with this bike. I would recommend the Discover to anyone looking for mid level pedal assistance but still wanting a bit of a workout. It has plenty of go from either the pedals or throttle and is a great no- compromise bike for those new to e-bikes.

fun to ride, does not look like a electric bike which makes it cool!

Very good.
