hilltopper does top hills
chuck (texas) 3/7/2019 8:23 AM
i have a Genesis 29er converted mtn bike to a bike trail bike yes a cheap wallyworld have had it for a few years and i would always use the excuse.. wind is blowing too hard or its too hot in summer to pedal no excuse any longer. took awhile to arrive, easy to install no problems!! it isnt real fast wasnt expecting too much out of the 250watt and it will really help with the climbing hills and head winds.. i had one issue the tire popped when i aired it up took it to the local shop he showed me why, the liner when fully aired up failed and spoke popped the tube he installed a heavy duty liner that is used on racing bikes aired it up i did let the Hilltopper people know and they apologized and credited me back the cost of repair that saved alot of time and hassel for that they get 5stars! i do recommend this kit for anyone that wants to enjoy riding the trails and needs a boost every once in a while.. next weekend i will try a trail that has a hill that will challenge it-had to walk it in the past

74 and on my bike again
Gary Poter (Menifee CA) 1/1/2019 7:00 PM
Ride to my water aerobics class. Its only a mile but quite steep hills. Motor makes it easy. Only get 6-7 miles before starting to slow down. Wish there was a battery “gauge ” so the power was easier to check.

Randy Mealer (Defiance, Ohio) 11/19/2018 1:09 PM
I’ve ridden a Burley Jet Creek for nine years and the addition of this motor has been phenomenal in increasing bike riding time…wind and hills are no problem anymore and it is pleasre to ride again. I’m 70 yrs. Old and I feel the addition of the motor has made my two wheel recumbent safer crossing highways, a push to get going when pulling out into the highway and more control uphills with traffic at my elbow.

Just what I needed
John Gardner (Boise, Idaho) 11/2/2018 7:29 PM
I have a Novara Gotham commuter (cool belt drive, NuVinci hub, but pretty heavy) and recently moved to a neighborhood that’s 330 ft above my normal commute (about an 8% grade). The hill was a bear on the bike but a 250 W front wheel makes it doable. It doesn’t do all the work for me. I have to keep the speed above 5 mph for it to develop significant power, so I still get some exercise, but I love it!

This is a great product from a good company with good people.
Ric Delahoussaye (Largo, FL) 10/24/2018 2:45 PM
I generally ride a diamond frame bike 30 miles a week and a 40 pound Linear recumbent (long wheel base) 45. Last month I purchased a HORIZON electric kit and have more than doubled the recumbent miles. Although the Florida gulf coast is mostly flat, the bridges over the intercoastal waterway are steep so the motor assist makes a real difference. Headwinds no longer deter me as the variable speed throttle allows just the right pull to keep a steady pace. All in all the Kit has added to the fun of bicycling. Thanks to Charles in sales and Tony and Sam in tech support for assisting in making my selection. This is a great product from a good company with good people.

Thank you Hill Topper folks
Paul (Denver and Idaho) 9/30/2018 9:54 AM
What a treat to do business with the folks at Hill Topper. I now have two commuter units one in Idaho and one in Denver my average ride is 25 to 35 miles. I have been riding for about 15 years but being the age of 80 I needed a little help the past few years. I researched electric bikes a few years ago even rode a couple here in Denver but I wanted my own personal look and feel. So about five years ago I found Hill Toppers. What a treat first the units are the best but that is part of the good part the people at Hill Toppers are the very best to work with and enjoy. I had to have a knee replacement last July well thank god for my bike it was the best therapy I could ask for. When in Idaho I get to ride along the Snake river what a treat knowing that I have this unit to help if the wind or rain shows up. When in Denver I cover a lot of area as they have wonderful bike trails all over the area. I ride all of the downtown area and the Cherry Creek dam up and over it takes some effort to get that done but with the help of Hill topper it is a beautiful ride up and overlooking the whole of Colorado. Thank you Andrew,Charles,Sam,Mark.

GREATEST of Customer Service!
Jeff Meuschke (Ft. Lauderdale) 2/8/2018 3:48 PM
Thank you Clean Republic for coming to my rescue when I had a battery issue last year. Under Warranty at 11.5 months, they without hesitation sent me an entire new $355 Battery pack when mine began to fail. I’ve gotten so much life, miles, and usage out of my Hill Topper from this first one and am about to replace the batteries again from so much more love on them. Seems the hub motor is going to last forever and that’s what counts! Thanks guys! 🙂

Commuter was just what I needed.
Laurie E. (Washington, DC area) 12/30/2017 10:12 AM
With asthma, the commuter was just what I needed to get up these hills in the DC area without having an attack. With the 20 miles range, that gets me though my day, I can almost get about 35 miles in, since I only use the assist for hills, and I call any incline a hill. It came in two days, was very easy to install. I did it myself. It took me over an hour because I was scared, and watch the video over and over. Before I install this, I never did any work on my bike, not even changed a flat. When I do group rides, people notice that I’m no longer the last person up the hills and tell me to slow down! They are impressed that I was able to installed it myself. I brought this in Feb. 2017, had one problem with the on/off switch which customer service addressed, sent me a new switch and instructed me on how to install it myself. They actually sent two switches, other than that, I had no problems with it. Great customer service that stands behind their product, great product, equals happy customer.

LOVE MY HILL TOPPER!
Cynthia Emminger (Butler, PA) 10/16/2017 12:12 PM
With the hills we have in Pennsylvania taking a leisurely ride could be exhausting and unenjoyably tough! NOT now that I have my hill topper. I placed it on my tricycle and now when I want to go to the store when we are at camp all I do is hop on my bike! I love it so much I will be thinking about another one in the spring for when I am at home.

Hill Topper for Bike Friday Tandem
David Saxen (Seattle) 9/30/2017 10:22 PM
I purchased a Hill Topper Horizon with a 20″ wheel for a Bike Friday Family Traveler that I ride my large and lazy 11 year old son to school. This conversion as been a blessing. What was once an absolutely daunting, exhausting and unsustainable routine due to a long slog from the ship canal to the top of Capitol Hill has become manageable, fun and reasonable to do daily. My wife can also now perform more of the transport with this set up. The Hill Topper Horizon has performed great, has plenty of power to climb Seattle’s ubiquitous hills, and long enough battery life for 3 round trips (possibly more). Installation was simple, though I did have to file down my front dropouts very slightly for the axle to fit.

Got a 26 inch wheel with the 12 mile sprinter.Lucky I have a bunch of bikes it fit 1 out of 9. However it works great on the one it did fit. Getting 27 miles on a 12 mile battery on a heavy huffy cruiser loaded with groceries and 185 pounds of me &lots of hills and they are steep and long.

Best Product in the Market
Jim Kelley (Andover, MN) 8/29/2017 6:56 PM
After buying a 26″ kit for my wife, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install. I was so satisfied with the quality, I bought another kit for my bike. Normally you’d think this the end of the review, but something happened that made me even more a fan. My wife’s bike was an old fashioned single speed cruiser and she decided to get a multi speed bike. It took only a few minutes to move the Hill Topper from her old bike to the new one. This is a great additional benefit.

Horizon Kit
Mark McCullough (OH) 6/26/2017 11:49 AM
Recently purchased the Horizon kit. Fast Shipping & Excellent Customer Support! Installation was effortless on my 1985 Schwinn mountain bike! I’m approaching 64 and bike riding was more work than pleasure Until I got the Horizon kit! Unreal performance! I use it to assist my peddling and assist is an understatement. It makes riding a complete pleasure again. No more straining on hills or windy conditions. Haven’t found a hill this can’t climb yet. I do pedal while using this but with Absolutely No strain. The quality is Excellent! Fit and Finish Perfect! This model also has a hard battery shell with a battery gauge and a throttle control. Well worth the extra $$! Just took this on a 10 mile jaunt with many hills yesterday and I used the Horizon most the time! When I got home I checked the charge and it only used up 1 LED! Amazing! I’ve only had this a few days but am So Impressed and excited to be bike riding again. Also took it on a local mountain bike trail and it took me Everywhere. The supplied tire isn’t a mountain bike tire but worked OK for that. You can easily change tires. The supplied rim is fantastic. More sturdy and durable than the original rim. SS spokes, etc. The hub motor is also Top quality and very quiet! I know it’s expensive but it will change your bicycling lifestyle forever. Highly Recommended!!

Stealthy
steve f (atlanta) 5/17/2017 2:54 PM
Bought the Sprinter a few years ago and installed it on a Schwinn Jaguar. The wheel matched rear perfectly. No problems with it, but you’ll pedal a lot in a hilly town like Atlanta. Where it really shines is on the bike trails, with mild hills, and no one suspects that you have a motor, it is so quiet, and looks like a brake drum. Before this, I tried a gas motor on another bike, but it was hard to operate, noisy, and had very high maintenance.

Easy to Ride, Easy to Load
Kay (Michigan) 4/2/2017 12:31 PM
am a woman in my 70’s and had no problem installing the electric bike kit. I got on the bike for my first ride, and I wish you could have seen the smile on my face! I had ridden a lot of e-bikes before and found them heavy to ride without the battery going, hard to control, and one even bucked every time it turned on. I put the 250 W , commuter battery kit on an older Specialized Vita I had. I put a more upright handlebar on the bike and installed a back rack for the battery. The kit seemed to add little weight to the bike and I was able to zip along the flats without the battery on, but it was so wonderful to have something to get up those hills and against a head wind. I was also able to lift the front wheel up to go inside my van, a Ford Transit Connect. It is so much lighter than an e-bike that I did not have the strength to load. If i have helped you make a decision, please use my code for the discount: Bluejay.

Hills can’t stop me now
Brenda Linley (Iowa City) 3/27/2017 10:12 AM
Iowa City is a hilly little town and I live atop a pretty one. As a beginning cyclist it has kept me from biking regularly. But no more! I now commute to my night-time teaching gig 1.5 miles away. I run errands on my bike with a bike trailer and my little one tagging along. It’s been an amazing change for me. My older kids ask me to wait to run errands so they can bike along with us. Thank you so much from this formerly sedentary mom. Brenda

Got the 24V 250 W Kit. Installation was easy. Made 2 long excursions in a hilly countryside—this is HEAVEN! Takes a hill with ease (even though I helped it anyway, because it is so easy) I am 69, had my bike sitting in the garage and always found an excuse to skip a ride. Now I SEEK an excuse to use it!!! I have only one regret: It took me 3 month to decide on the purchase. I could have had 3 more month of pure enjoyment. Thank You for a great product, Clean Republic!!

Originally from Seattle. I was in the market to buy Electric Bike. Found Clean Republic instead. Best Decision I could have made. So good had my wife buy one also. We purchased 20mile Commuter Package. Retro’d my REI Novaro Jaunt–Cruiser bike. Retro’d my wife’s Electra Townie–also Cruiser. Sweet–Oro Valley Az–has at least–100 miles of paved bike trails. Even better than Seattle.

I’m mountain biking again- 2 wheel drive!
mr crainge (northern califonia) 12/26/2016 6:18 AM
I bought the 20mile kit with some concern that the wheel, motor, or other parts would be insufficient for rugged mountain biking. Ha, I was wrong and glad. MY mountain bike takes me up 1900 feet of rocky, root and rut filled single track in no time. Climbing is better than expected. With pedaling, yet in 2nd or 3rd gear opposed to climbing gear, I can easily navigate rugged trails wet or dry, much faster. Having front wheel drive while climbing is fabulous. I have jammed down these single tracks with a front suspension fork of low quality and have not had a single problem or run out of battery on these trips. Honestly, my bike takes quite a beating and I am impressed that everything is still working like new a year later. Only suggestion would be a meter on the battery or one available to buy. Accelerator button is difficult to keep pushed down when climbing rocky trails. (not designed for this, I modified a bit to make trigger a bit larger.) Bottom line, I love the kit. I am mountain biking again, and if your wondering can withstand off road…yes!

At 68 years old sometimes you need help.
Dan Miller (Boynton Beach, FL) 12/3/2016 11:46 AM
My kit came in and I had to grind inner forks on my bike to clear the new wheel hub. Installed easy and charges in 3-4 hours. This is a blessing. Reaches 15 mph with me at 195 pounds. I am extremely happy with my new old bike.

Alex Cruz (Los Angeles) 12/1/2016 12:35 PM
I have been looking at the conversion kit scene for a while, but Clean Republic won my money because they offer returns, that tells me they stand by their product because they know they have a great product. I bought the economy kit, and I love this thing, it turns my two-mile commute into a breeze. I’m a big guy 300lbs plus, and this pulls me fine don’t let your weight stop you. I am riding longer getting more exercise I love it. I’m looking at getting the ranger kit for my mountain bike next year, I’m that in love with this product I could not recommend it highly enough!!!

The 24v takes the suck out of hills!
Eric (Seattle, WA) 10/23/2016 4:20 PM
I decided to purchase a Hill Topper Sprinter 24v for my Bacchetta Giro 20 recumbent bike — and I just took it out for its first test-ride. So far, it’s working well! The Sprinter’s battery fits neatly into the bottle cage behind my seat. The cables from the wheel to the handlebar and to the battery are plenty (but not too much). And the wheel itself fit my fork with just a little adjusting of the spacer rings and of the brake pads (as the rim is a bit wider than the original rim). My Giro 20, with all its gear (including the Sprinter itself, weighs in at about 55lbs. I live at the bottom of a half-mile 7.5% grade hill — and with the Hill Topper activated, I’m able to pedal moderately and go about 13 mph up the hill. It definitely takes the suck out of the hill (which is the start of pretty much every ride I go on). On a relatively flat grade, I can go about 14 mph without pedaling at all. And, it helps if I need a faster start accelerating out of a traffic stop. I’d thought about buying the 36v kit, but opted for the 24v kit for several reasons: 1) it’s less expensive, 2) the battery option (e.g., the Sprinter) was lighter and smaller, 3) the motor switch was smaller and didn’t require me to re-arrange my handlebar set-up, and 4) I didn’t figure I’d need that much power, although at 55lbs total, my bike does fall in the market for which the 36v kit might be intended. But, I didn’t buy the Hill Topper to haul me around, just to take the pain & huffing out of riding up some of the bigger hills near where I live. So, that’s the update of the moment! Thanks from a happy customer!

Perfect for San Francisco hills!
Kristen (San Francisco) 10/22/2016 6:20 PM
Living in SF, my main mode of transportation is by bike. I’m a woman in my 30s, and had trouble getting up all the hills under my own power, so I bought the 12 mile kit and had my local bike shop put it on for me. I have a Public Bikes step-through style bike with a heavy steel frame, and the kit fits on perfectly. No joke- the Hill Topper kit has changed my life! I cannot believe how fast I can get around; on flat ground without pedaling the motor is almost too fast. Going up steep hills, I do have to pedal in a low gear but am able to make it up the hill with minimal exertion. I would recommend this kit to anyone looking for an economical way to upgrade your current bike.

Simple and Right
Mike H (Midwest) 9/7/2016 6:10 PM
For anyone wanting a real quality ebike conversion that is simple to install and maintain this is it. I installed the 24V 20 mile kit on a 24″ Tern folding bike and it was a perfect match. The bike will scoot along in high gear at 20 mph and you will fill like superman on the pedals. Not as sophisticated as a sensing pedal assist system but for most of us we are just going to run it wide open all the time anyway so you don’t need the rest of the junk that comes with the Chinese kits. These are well made and economical in design to minimize weight and maximize distance. If you want to build a dragster then the high watt kits might be be a better fit but if you are looking for good transportation across town this is the dependable way to go. It is a high quality kit and the cleanest you will find.

Simple, efficient, perfect
Jon (Seattle) 8/26/2016 12:38 PM
For anyone considering the 350-watt system, here’s what I’ve experienced. Up mild grades that are normally ridden at a slow but manageable pace, the motor can double my road speed and greatly reduce the applied effort. On level ground, the hub makes pedaling optional. When the bike’s panniers are loaded with groceries, steep hills that typically have me working hard and sweating in granny gear become much less challenging. I do have to approach these mini-mountains at about 10 mph and then maintain a quick cadence to keep the motor in its happy rpm zone. These motors are intended to ‘assist’ you and on a long climb it’s sooo nice to have the boost. My normal grocery run without power assist would take about 45 minutes of riding round-trip. I live on top of a hill and about 80% of that time was climbing back home. With the 350 hub, I can do the journey in around 20 minutes if I’m heavy on the throttle and don’t cheat on the leg work. Now, I can buy ice cream. 🙂 I haul my bike inside a small hatchback car when occasionally traveling to distant ride sites and that always requires removal of the front wheel. To remove the 350 hub, the only tool needed for the 18mm axle nuts is a Crescent wrench. With the wheel off and the battery bag unstrapped from the rack, the bike is then as lightweight and easy to load as it was before the power assist was added. Also, if you ride trails that do not allow motorized bikes, it’s just as simple to put the original front wheel back on. From what I’ve seen out in the e-bike world, that versatility is a rare feature…. and I really appreciate it.

Outstanding E Conversion of Standard Bicycle
John Schuster (Woodbury, Minnesota) 8/23/2016 2:57 PM
When I ordered I made a mistake and ordered the wrong wheel size. I was immediately shipped the correct one and later reimbursed after I sent the wrong one back. I have the 36 Volt. On the hills and slopes where I live, I am now getting over 12 miles on a charge. I have learned to throttle only when I need extra power. I plan to buy a spare battery and then get 25 miles. This is good since I weigh over 200 lbs. and the original rating is for a 170 lb. on flat terrain. So, I am very pleased. I am 70 years old.

Like an angel put its hand on your back to help!
Deborah Bennett (Colorado) 8/22/2016 3:10 PM
My husband and I purchased 12 mile batteries for our hybrid style mountain bikes. We’re 66 and 68, fit but facing decreasing endurance for longer rides. Before the Hill Topper kits on our bikes, we’d think twice about a 15 mile ride on single track. We travel frequently and are always searching for great places to ride in the dirt. Now we have confidence that our batteries will help us get back to the van. We try to use the battery only when necessary to conserve power for the return. Having the angel’s hand on your back when a hill looms has made so much difference in our enjoyment. It’s all the pleasure without the pain! We’ve gone further with less energy expended than we ever did before. Here in Salida Colorado we’ve been on some great biking trails in the hills above town, “hitting the button ” just to get a boost up a rise or gully. Then when we return to the van, we plug the chargers into an inexpensive inverter in the 12 volt outlet and charge them up with the van’s battery, either while parked for the night or while traveling down the road. Our only challenge has been in guessing how much battery remains, which is quite dependent upon the height of the hills and distance, of course. My husband’s battery is gone before mine, as he outweighs me by 70 pounds. He probably should have bought the 20 mile battery. Others have written about using the Hill Topper in town on familiar turf, but we want to say that mountain biking with the battery is a blast and you’ll have so much fun! If you decide to buy one, you’ll get a discount if you use the referral code “deborahbennett” at checkout.

Good low-cost commuting ebike kit, modest power adequate
Dewey (Arlington, VA) 7/12/2016 7:28 AM
I live in Arlington, VA and due to recent MetroRail track work I chose the hill topper electric front wheel kit to ride the 4 miles to and from work in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, DC. From the banks of the Potomac River at Rosslyn, the Custis and Arlington Blvd Trails rise about 600 feet in two miles to the neighborhoods behind Arlington National Cemetery which have ‘Heights’ in the name. I bought the $500 economy 8-mile model that adds about 20 pounds to my heavy steel 1990’s 21-speed hybrid. Combined weight of me, the bike, plus my commuting gear, means this little 250 watt 8fun motor is hauling about 280 pounds. With the motor I can ride up the hills in middle gear and with hard pedalling manage about 6-8mph, on the steepest sections of the hills the motor cannot pull the weight so it feels like I am riding a tandem with one other rider helping which is still an improvement on no assistance and I appreciate the exercise. On the flats or a slight incline I find myself staying mostly in top gear and averaging about 10-12mph. On the downhill the motor doesn’t provide assistance which is great if like me you don’t want to go faster than 15mph. I appreciate the modest boost when taking off from a full stop on the road at a stop sign or traffic light signal.

First I would like to say im 6 ft and 325 lbs.I Was in great shape years ago but a bad knee and just having fun has slowed me down plus im 50 so I don’t need to say any more. But let get to it I bought the ranger pack and its been great so far. took it around 12 miles almost on battery power alone then on my way home I went the way of the big hill.I had to start to help it along but just as they say its like someone pushing you. Don’t get me wrong I was going slow but with my help over the top and I was not huffing and puffing.

Best Bike Accessory EVER
FH (Northern Virginia) 5/14/2016 6:35 PM
My decision to get a Hill Topper was made after many months of reading about/researching all the available e-bike hubs and direct drives available that would 1. remove my distaste for hills 2. save my injured knee 3. and get me back on my bikes again. Not only has the Hill Topper met those expectations, in many ways it has exceeded them. It is a sheer JOY to have the HT “along for the ride”, and I love how it attacks the hills and inclines with eager enthusiasm. It took a mere few minutes to install the wheel, requiring only one extra washer to meet the spacing requirements on my lovely vintage 1996 steel hybrid. The wires are nice and sturdy, and run almost invisibly along the step-through frame to where I have the batteries on the back rack. The 40 mile range (double 20 mile lithium batteries) have been perfect for my long rides, and have provided even farther range than 40 miles during a number of rides as I’m using them for pedal assist. The one thing I wish the kit had was a battery charge indicator to tell me what discharge stage my batteries were for any given time. At the moment, I am having to “guess” how much charge is left, and disconnecting #1/connecting #2 at 22-24 mile intervals. But that is the only thing on my wish list. Everything else – riding my bike again, zipping along the roads at a cool 21 mph, laughing at the hills as my Hill Topper helps me charge up them, and waving hello as I fly smiling past riders who look tired and stressed – has been too much fun for words. THANK YOU for a GREAT product!

Has gotten me back on the road with my trusty slightly retooled mtn bike. Easy to install. Quick delivery. Great customer service. Even with mobility challenge, pedal assist gives the workout needed and lets me keep up with 10 yr old cycling buddy. With mild winter here this yr, we were out on the bikes on a regular basis all year. Well worth it 🙂

Everything I hoped for!
Dave Wolff (Ann Arbor, MI) 3/31/2016 8:57 PM
I received my Economy Kit today. I had to do some minor filing due to a slightly fat fork, but other than that it installed exactly as stated in all of the literature. Even with the filing I was ready to go in half an hour. My house is uphill from almost everywhere. On my first ride I knew this Kit was going to do everything I wanted it to do. Up hills was no problems. Up steep hills that I almost couldn’t manage before were no problem with very little peddling help. I am 74 years old and had nearly given up bike riding. With this Kit I’m back on the road and thrilled to death. Thank you Clean Republic for an outstanding product at a reasonable price. My neighbor, nearly as old as I am, after seeing mine,is going to get one for his bike. Not only can I ride again, I’ll have another old geezer to ride with! It just doesn’t get much better…

On the other side of FEAR is FREEDOM! This is a saying that I use when I am making a Life changing decision where there is a chance for failure. After many emails to the Hill Topper support group, I shook off the Fear of change and went for it. I ordered the Hill Topper! It came in perfect condition! It was EASY to assemble just as explained in their illustration! OFF I WENT! AWSOME! FREEDOM!!! I am always striving to live a smaller life so I can have a bigger life. Hat’s off to Hill Topper! A year later
Gregory Muschlitz (Charlotte, NC) 3/13/2016 10:35 AM
I have been riding for a year now and I have covered about 450 miles. People have stopped me and wanted to see how it worked. Now I just hand out the yellow order form that came with the motor. After all of these miles I will soon need a new bike and I can just move the motor wheel over to it. I bought a Bicycle Computer that tracks my mileage, speed, each trip detail and over all mileage. Even the top speed I hit over all. which was 22 MPH.

This is the way to go
Josh (Fremont, CA) 2/25/2016 3:58 PM
So far I’ve had this kit on for 2 weeks. It would not fit on my vintage road bike so I sold that bike and bought a comfort bike and it fit right on. I use it for a bout 3 miles at a time and I can’t see ever going back to a regular bike unless I was looking for more exercise. With this kit you still get the exercise. You pedal the same as you normally would and it feels like your going twice as fast. Like someone is pushing you down the street. I don’t have hills where I live so I can’t say how it would feel on those. I really like to use it when there is a gust of wind, to pull my son in the bike trailer, keep my work clothes from getting sweaty and to save tons of unnecessary gallons of gas. FYI if you purchase the quick release axle kit they are not skewer type quick releases so you will not be able to us a locking skewer kit on the axle. This kit replaces the axle nut with a quick release. I was hoping to use a locking skewer for added security but I can’t.

Absolutely wonderful
David (Albuquerque) 2/16/2016 3:20 PM
Eighteen or so months ago, I bought an Electra Cruiser 7D. It’s a steel, cruiser style 7 speed-and weighs just over 40 pounds. (I weigh somewhat over 180 pounds now-but at the time I weighed WELL over 200 pounds) I live in an area with lots of hills. So while I liked the cruiser (a good, solid bike) it was just too heavy for riding up all the hills-so I bought a flat bar road bike (which I adore for long distance riding)-and the poor cruiser sat, gathering dust…for 18 months. Having periodically poked around online checking out electric bikes, I eventually ran across some reviews of the Hill Topper. After reading about it, I thought “you know, this might work on the cruiser”. So I ordered one. I received it on Monday. I was a bit leery of the installation as I am a complete, total and utter mechanical incompetent. However, as it turned out, while I couldn’t do it in 3 minutes-I did it in about 20-including swapping the stock tire that came with the hub motor for the original tire off the cruiser (I like tires that match…LOL). After fully charging the battery last night, I went out today to test it out. I took the bike on a ride with over 800 feet of climbing and a total distance of 18 miles. Most of the climbing was in the first 9 miles (750 feet) including two short portions with grades of 6-8%-and 6 of the 9 miles were spent riding directly into a headwind of about 10 MPH. The motor performed flawlessly! I used it in the “proper” fashion (i.e. as a pedal assist) to help me up hills and when starting off from a stop, and at the end of my ride I still had power left in the battery when I got home. Like many, my biggest problem with bike commuting is you don’t want to arrive at your destination hot and sweaty-or (for me at least) have to ride home-uphill in my case-after a day at work when you’re tired. Based on my experience today, the Hill Topper makes bike commuting a viable option. Although I may need a spare battery next!

Best invention ever!!
Karuna (Florida) 1/5/2016 1:14 PM
I just received my e-bike kit yesterday and my daughter installed it today in less than 10 minutes, watching the online video. So straightforward & simple to install! I bought LEED’s e-bike kit a few months ago and finally took it to my local bike shop for help after trying for an hour or more to install it ourselves. None of us ever got the unit installed & working properly. It was cumbersome, difficult and LEED customer service was not helpful. I probably lost about $150 between the bike shop fees & the return postage (which LEED would not pay). The Hill Topper is amazing. I wish I’d gotten it years ago and I’m hoping I can spare others from the LEED experience I had. Everyone should have a Hill Topper! I’m retired, travel frequently in my RV and my bike is my only means of transportation once I reach my destination. I no longer have to worry about going too far and being unable to make it back home. So happy I can explore more now! If you’ve been thinking about an e-bike conversion kit, this is certainly the one I would recommend. Now I can keep up with my daughter & my grandson when we go riding!

Great product, Great service
Dave C. (Cali.) 12/24/2015 12:27 PM
I went car-less about a year ago. My Hill-topper on an Electra Cruiser ( 3 speed) makes it easy and practical. My commute is 7 miles round trip and my town is about 10 miles across. Living in wine country, the traffic on weekends can be very heavy. I just cruse on by. Its great! What I like most about the kit is how basic it is. — No on-board computers — No electronic peddle assist — No handle bar display Just a motor, a battery and a switch. Excellent! And the customer service is top notch. I had a custom harness made and through some miscommunication ( probably on my end) it was wrong. One e-mail, and I had a return shipping label and a new harness in about a week. Perfect! With the battery hidden in a pannier, and the wiring concealed under handle bar tape, I’ve had people follow me into parking lots to ask me ” I saw you pass those guys on road bikes. What kind of bike is that?” Then it’s a 10 minuet conversation about what a Clean Republic Hill Topper is, and where to get one. Last Word If you want to ride more, go father and have some fun, pull the trigger and get a Hill topper.

Turned my life around!
Barbara Banks (Atlanta GA) 12/4/2015 10:43 AM
This 55-year old grandma has loved biking since my youth but haven’t done it since moving to hilly GA in the 1990s. Now, I’m older, fatter, arthritic. I’m currently working (as a nanny) only a mile from home, but I carry a HUGE bag of FUN for the kiddies every day, and couldn’t manage with a backpack. I also knew that without knee replacement, I couldn’t currently negotiate the steep hills of this city. I began researching tricycles, and spent about 6 months wavering between affordable pre-motorized bikes, from companies with BAD reputations, and cheapo trikes to which I could add a motor. I finally settled on a Schwinn Meridian and Electric-Bike-Kit. And I couldn’t be happier. There are a lot of things I didn’t consider about riding a trike on these narrow urban streets. The road crown really throws you off at first, and trying to stay to that invisible “bike lane”, I nearly had to quit. Upright Trikes are LESS stable than bicycles, and taking a turn at speed, or bringing the vehicle up short in an emergency, takes a good deal of practice. I’m pleased to say I’m GETTING that practice. The kit was a breeze to assemble, and the power provided (12-mi lithium) is JUST ENOUGH to make me work pretty hard getting up the steepest hills, which is just what I wanted. (I do use an exercycle on days I can’t get outside.) It’s getting chilly in GA now, and commuter traffic is NOT kind to a waddling old gal on a trike. I’ve bought a neon vest and flashing front and rear lights. But with my trike I can cut through the park to get to work and home again, and when they finish the new grocery store a mile in the other direction, I might retire my car altogether! My enthusiasm inspired my sedentary husband was inspired to buy himself a “REAL” (21-sp) bike, and has been getting out almost every day, so you have reformed 2 couch potatoes into budding athletes, Clean Republic!

This is a wonderful set-up. I’ve been using it on my adult (HEAVY) three-wheel bike for about 5 years now. I still have the same wheel and battery and they’re going strong. I typically ride 8-10 miles with a 20 pound dog in the basket at times and this kit really powers through. Can’t say enough good things. I have two more bikes that I have put the kit on so friends can come along and have several more friends that have purchased kits. They all love their kits.

I just had to put my bike away for the winter. My commute starts at 6:30 am and it is now just too cold and dark at that time. I now have 5,217.67 miles on my first Hilltopper that I purchased in 2011. It has never given me one minute of trouble. I did upgrade to a 20 mile Li battery this year, but the original sla was still just fine. My wife is only able to ride at all because of her Hilltopper. She has to use assist most of the time. On one ride this summer she got 27 miles out of her battery! We have tried a couple ebikes, but the Hilltoppers do the job for a lot less money. Thank you for a great product.

First Ride Review (Salsa Fargo)
Keith Dury (Marion, Indnana) 11/5/2015 2:17 PM
Review after my first ride: I bought the 40 mi. lithium Hilltopper kit and installed it on a Salsa Fargo steel ‘Great Divide Route” bicycle with 2.1” off-road tires. I had to file the fork dropouts a tad for the wheel to fit, though that only took five minutes. I had fully charged both batteries the night before, so in 20 minutes the wheel was installed and ready to go. Weight of bike, all carriers, batteries and me totaled 225 pounds. I used the motor constantly but added my own pedaling in high gear—never sweating with light pedaling on Northern Indiana-level roads. Going out I averaged about 13mph into the 15-20mph quartering headwind. My first battery lasted 12 miles into the wind. Coming back, however, with a quartering tailwind I ran about 18-20 mph and the second battery lasted 18 miles for a total of 30 miles, which is about what I’d expect given the wind and weight. (I believe the 40 mile rating is based on a 170 pound person, level riding, and no wind. Of course I was not using the hilltopper as intended, and don’t plan to use it again this way (constant power). My wife and I plan to use them as a boost uphill and maybe sometimes to stretch the miles to get on a motel on 10 day trips of 300-500 miles. I am quite satisfied with the product and my testing came out about where I’d expect based on their tests. I am now figuring out how to add one to my wife’s Trek Superfly Gary Fisher 100AL (her fork has no dropouts). I am one satisfied customer and convinced that adding a hilltopper wheel to an existing bike is much better than buying a completely separate electric bike. –Keith Drury, Marion, Indiana November 5, 2015

Best Ever! LOVE it for the hilly Ozarks
cheryl (Arkansas) 11/2/2015 2:31 PM
Best thing ever! MY husband easily replaced the front wheel and connected the ‘gadget’. I took it out for my first ride today and was amazed at how intuitive it is to use. Turn the ‘on’ switch before taking off and, thereafter, pedal with your legs and, at hills when you need assistance, push the little button on the right handlebar until you no longer need electric assist. This beats the ‘you know what’ out of many of the other electric wheels I’ve seen on the market where people complained about the difficulty of using or reaching the electric switch. And I LOVE that it is electric ‘assist’ rather than all electric so I still get exercise but don’t have to go up our very hilly areas without help.

Philip Smiley (Kirkland, WA) 10/12/2015 4:14 PM
This Hilltopper is eye watering. Finally an affordable electric bike. I have a 1971 Raleigh Record and had to have the forks filed to accept the Hilltopper Axle. The bike is amazing. you press the button and you just ride on flat surfaces without pedaling unless you want to speed then you pedal with the button held down. If you let go of the button it returns to a normal 10 speed. Be careful about pressing the button when you don’t want the bike to go. It could leave without you and it can be confusing at first if you press it did not want to go fast. Makes Hills seem like level ground. I haven’t had to walk it up a Hill since I put the Hilltopper on. Customer service of Clean Republic is great!!!

Quality Product responsive customer service
Patrick O’Day (Chicago) 7/12/2015 2:40 PM
I purchased the Hill Topper kit with the economy battery. The kit was delivered in under a week and was just as they claim, super easy to install. I put it on an old Giant Yukon mountain bike. If I had to give the motor a power rating I would say it’s equal to about 1 man power. Not from a dead stop but in general. The motor without pedaling would get me going about as fast as I could pedal comfortably and I would estimate that I could accelerate about twice as fast as normal when I pedaled and used the motor for assistance. Pedaling while using the motor intermittently to accelerate and to stay at speed with headwinds and small inclines I got about 12-13 miles from the 8 mile economy battery. Due to personal factors I won’t go into, I had to return the kit because I needed the money and they were awesome about it. I emailed them to ask what I needed to do and they said just ship it back and we will process it and issue a refund. Once they received it they processed the return within two days. So bottom line is great kit, great service, quick to response to emails and overall a pleasant interaction. I would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family. Patrick

works well, some surprises on fitting my bike
Carine Wood (Burlington, ON, Canada) 7/12/2015 12:01 PM
I had a Edwin Toba BionX e-bike that worked very well. Sophisticated electronics with different levels of assist, mini trip computer, totally silent etc. It was very heavy, no way I could use it without some assist. I sold it last year as I got fitter and needed space. This year my health is not so good so I looked at fitting an e-motor to my current road/hybrid bike. I chose hill topper because it fits on the front wheel, and I could exchange it back to my normal wheel fairly easily, or so I thought. My fork is wide enough (I measured it before ordering)but the HT middle axle was just too fat to fit the fork. No mention that this might be a problem on the website. My husband is an engineer, very “handy”, and he grinded the fork just enough to fit the HT axle. So my bike works, and yes, it is very helpful to climb up my local hills on the Niagara escarpment. Also make sure that the motor cable is on the right side when the wheel is clipped on. I have not tried to revert the front wheel back yet, I hope the original wheel will be stable! The battery position is best behind the saddle in my opinion. Happy hill climbing…

Okay. My 65th birthday is coming up. I used to love to ride a bike, so I bought a Tricycle (Alemeda) from Walmart. The only problem was I couldn’t get it up the hills anymore. The Hilltopper was the perfect solution. I don’t have to use the motor much, but it makes the difference of turning my bike from an exercise chore to an exhilarating adventure. I live in a condominium complex and have a safe, but hilly path to ride one mile. It took me (with no help) about 10 minutes to install on my Trike. I couldn’t have made a better choice for FUN!

Retired factory mechanic/outdoors-man 57th birthday gift; kit w/12 mile lithium for helping fun times on 10 y/o Mountain/street bike (Raleigh) crossover. Simple quick conversion done in time to apply charged battery. Peddling only on hills I got 8 miles climbing 800 ft on first run. 2nd day out realized I was having so much fun I ordered a 20 mile lith. At 6’2″ 240 there is no noticed difference freewheeling, but all hills are easy (even grinding along in 1st gear on the steep stuff). I’m drooling over the roads and trails now available and fun with the power assist. I’ve tracked E-bikes evolving over 10 years and Hilltopper always looked like the best fit for a fun easy workout. This old guy is happy to play like a kid again!

I wanted to get an electric bike for a while but my biggest concern was the weight of the bike and once the battery dies, pedaling will be hard. I came across this website and couldn’t be happier :):):):( It’s so easy to install and doesn’t add a lot of weight to my bike and if the battery is on empty I don’t have to worry about pedaling because it won’t be difficult as opposed to an electric bike. I really love my bike now. It goes so fast!! Thank you!!!!!!!

After several years researching & tracking electric bikes, I got a Hill Topper kit with a 12 mile battery. On the first day I brutalized it with a 6 mile hilly road climbing 600 feet, pedaling only the steep stuff before it quit. My mountain bike is now fun again at age 57. I’m ordering a 20 mile battery ASAP. “Too much effort to bother to ride” just turned into “Hey, this is fun exercise”! At 6’2″ 250 pounds I am impressed with the capability of my new (exercise) toy. The technology has finally arrived at my level of expectation.

My wife and I are heading into retirement and wanted to stay active. We love biking and the landscape of where we live. The hilly terrain has always be a challenge, especially when you factor in our age 🙂 The Hill Topper is a Godsend. Exactly the right amount of assistance when we need it. I know others have commented on lack of power, but I do not believe it’s designed to replace your pedal power. If you want that, then get a motorcycle. We still get our workout with the cardiac arrest ha ha. Anyway, thank you guys at Clean Republic for a great product! I will definitely be recommending this product to our friends.

Best electric solution on the market bar none
Leifur Thor (Portland Oregon) 4/22/2015 9:10 PM
After a year and a half of researching electric bikes, and even buying an Evolo, which was super heavy and very poorly designed, I was finally able to ask the right questions, and hunt for the right solution. I wanted a full size 26in tire, rugged, folding, lightweight electric bike. Something I could ride if the motor ran out of steam, something I could fold in to any trunk. A bike I could take for serious offroading, or look sharp riding downtown. My solution was buying the hill topper kit for it’s lightweight and small though strong motor hiding so stelthy, no one knows I ride an electric bike, so it’s less interesting to theives or cops wanting to give me a hard time on bike paths. I combined the kit with a new Montague Paratrooper, a bike the military paratroopers jump out of planes with strapped to their backs. My cost for the new rugged bike that folds in to any trunk, and a 20 mile lithium kit 2k. Total weight 43 pounds. I challange anyone to beat the laundry list of benefits this particular combo can provide. And not only does it turn heads everywhere I go, it’s super stylin at the same time, not looking like most geeky electric bikes. Two years riding it every day everywhere this kit is solid as a rock, the staff totally helpful, the kit a work of artistic simplicity and style. Can’t say enough about the company, the kits, the motor, and the performance. As they say in Spinal Tap, this one, it’s an 11!

I spent an afternoon carefully unpacking, reading, charging and installing my motor. The wheel went right into the fork and tightened down. I used a torque wrench as instructed. I mounted the battery down by the peddles using a water bottle holder that was already there. I held the battery pack nice and tight. The wires then ran from there. I had a canvas carrier on my handlebars and that is where I stored all of the excess wired. It turned out to be a really nice installation. Now on to riding. Wow, what fun. Now I can go up that long hill (80 foot rise in 1/2 mile) without any strain. I am 76 years old and the motor is a God send for me. No more walking my bike on hills. Spring is coming soon and I will be out racking up the miles. Thanks Hill Topper

Received my kit in a few days. Installed it in minutes on my 2014 Giant Cypress. They are a perfect match, and seem to be made for each other. It is the dead of winter here, so my first few runs were in about 20 degree weather. I have made 3-ten mile trips thus far, using the motor on hills and headwinds only. The 12 mile lithium battery has had plenty of power left each time. The light weight of the kit means that you can pedal normally without any noticeable drag. My other electric bikes are heavy, and hard to pedal without the motor. I am pedaling all the time anyway, but now the wind and hills are not a factor. The only modification that I made was to make the push button a little bigger. I can’t wait until summer!

Steven Baker (Montrose, Colorado) 1/2/2015 9:41 AM
I am 70 years old and live at 6,000 ft. in western Colorado and have only 40% lung capacity. Originally bought the basic kit but upgraded to the 10 mile lithium battery. What new freedom I now have to get from home to about any point in our little town. No way I can huff it, but the smaller longer range battery gives this handicapped guy an opportunity to ride everyday that weather is half decent. I am planning to add a second 10 mile battery onto my 7 speed commuter bike next spring. That way I have some backup and I don’t have to fear being stranded away from home and having to call for a lift. I recommend that new purchases start with the better 10 mile battery rather than the heavier and shorter distance basic model. This kit has truly changed my life and I highly recommend it. The only question I have is about battery life. After next season is done I will know more about that. For the price the Hilltopper is a great deal in my mind. SGB, Montrose, Colorado

LOVE IT
Jon (Lebanon PA) 10/10/2014 11:35 AM
Okay, I waited about three months before reviewing. This kit is the ticket! I weigh 170. I bought the ten mile lithium battery. When I first got the kit I decided to see if ten miles was realistic: I used my bike as a “motorcycle”, no pedaling and went an honest ten miles, battery still had some power. That was on level ground, no wind, so ideal conditions. So, yes, it can take 170 pounds ten miles. I ride to work now most days, a fourteen mile round trip. I have never run out of battery power, but I do use the motor for uphill and windy conditions mostly. I have taken several 50 mile bike rides (mostly flat terrain), and used the motor for windy conditions and several small hills. Did not run out of power by end of the ride. I think what I like best about this is that it greatly increases my enjoyment of bicycling, I used to hate a steep hill near my house, now, no problem, I used to dislike long upgrades, or going into the wind… no longer. Now the whole time I’m cycling it is enjoyable. Increased enjoyment = increased riding = increased fitness and some small weight loss. I’ve probably put about 1000 miles on my bike since installing kit. If lithium batteries ever come down in price I might consider getting the 20 mile battery and take along the ten mile battery and do some SERIOUS long distance biking. For now the ten mile battery has exceeded my expectations. Oh, one last thing, I really wasn’t expecting the 250 watt motor to feel as powerful as it does… it’s really a pretty good boost, I’d say it equals about 75% of my max pedaling power, so on average it seems that pedaling plus motor together seems to be about double the power of pedaling alone. Nice!

I’m big (235lbs), ride an xl Cafe Racer; matching 1.75, front brake, suspension sissy bar, banana seat and clubman handlebars – did I mention the bike is heavy?! The 8mile lithium kit makes my 16 tooth single speed go just under top speed with vigorous peddling – seems about perfect to me. Motor is mostly quiet and super discrete – most people can’t tell I’m riding a motorized bike (except when I pass them maybe). Overall I love the kit and transformed this retro head turner into my everyday commute.

Tandem
Marin (Santa Barbara) 7/16/2014 12:01 PM
This is like a drug: with the push of a button, no more hill. Expensive yes, but its Sooo nice. I installed this on my tandem I use to take my daughter to school (6 mi each way). I bought it used, with the heavy lead-acid battery, and everything worked perfectly, there was plenty of power for my daughter (85 lb) & I (135 lb) to get up hills easily (with pedalling also). I found I could usually or almost do 2 round trips on one charge, but its such a rude surprise when the battery runs out at the very last hill, I ended up charging it every round trip. The heavy battery is kind of a pain to deal with (moving it off the bike to the charger every night), the weight meant the rack had to be really solid – but acceptable. I found no degradation in the battery life over the 2 years I used it (1-2x/wk)

Bought two kits for me and my boyfriends new 2014 trek verve 1’s. Fit was tight in the forks but worked. Had to file the drop outs a little, no big deal. The wheels were a little out of true, my boyfriend true the wheels himself. Lots of fun goes 17.5-18 mph top speed. We can climb hills in our neighborhood at 13-15 mph, while pedaling of course. We got the sprinter 10 mile lithium kit, range seems good so far. We don’t mind pedaling, rode 8 miles and still had plenty of battery power. Great product, highly recommended. Thank you

My wife is quite thrilled with her new electric bike. She particularly likes being able to get through intersections more quickly — we have one with such a short light that a bike can get caught in the when traffic starts moving. She’s able to go to meetings now without getting sweaty, and to the farmer’s market without getting tired from the load on the return trip. The 10 mile battery seems more than enough for her use. She uses it in short bursts, and it lasts quite a while. I am also pleased overall with the product, with one caveat: the wheel was significantly out of true. I was able to bring it back, but I think it could have been shipped much closer than it was. I also had to file down the slots, and spread the fork (used our car’s scissor jack), file down the shoulder of the hub itself and add spacers to get the wheel to turn freely. Took about an hour total. The forks are pretty fat on her 29 year old Bianchi, so it’s unlikely that most people would have to do this.

I have been using my Hill Topper for a couple months now. It was totally easy to install on my Trek bicycle. I already have 160 miles on it. It makes it easy to maintain speeds of 18 mi/hour on level ground and makes going up hills much easier. I now use it for my 3.5 mile commute to work. It is fun!

Got another one!
Grant Haller (Boise, ID) 4/28/2014 11:33 AM
My wife was a little jealous of my hill topper equipped bike, so I got her one for her birthday last year. It did not fit on her mountain bike due to a fat fork, so we shopped around and were lucky to find a great used mountain bike. The owner had converted it to a commuter w/ thinner tires and fenders. We added a rear rack, more upright handlebars, basket and pannier and lights. The hill topper wheel hub just touched the fork on the right side, so I talked to their excellent help on the phone. I moved a washer from left to the right side as instructed and it fits great. We had a wire come loose and it was replaced w/o question. My wife prefers to use the motor only on the long hill climb to our house, but is glad she has it on the flats if it is a long ride, especially if we are loaded w/ groceries. She also likes to get a boost when starting through busy intersections in town. She weighs 100 lbs, and I didn’t know how much difference that would make, so I made sure her bike had nice low gears for the steep climb to our home. Her light weight makes a huge difference. She goes up the hill much faster than me (175 lbs) and in a higher gear. She loves her hill climber as much as I love mine. I have had my (20 mile li-ion battery) for 3 years now and it has had no issues.

Its not an electric bike, its an almost perfect supplement to manual power when you want to go where its not always the most kind. It increases your range and enjoyment. The product is well make and honest. I would offer a small piece of advice. There are few front forks made of steel and they are not designed to accept the level of initial torque that can be applied at a standing start. Start from manually peddling to reduce the load. I broke one fork before calculating the load. Enjoy and benefit from a quality product that increases riding pleasure.

Very nice complete kit for people who don’t want to spec and build it on their own. Took about half an hour to route the wiring to safe places on the bicycle during the installation.

thanks clean republic got the kit a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately my forks didn’t accept the wheel hub so I had to go to my local bike shop where they had a second hand set that would, the kit went on as simple as your video said. I’m 57 years young and bike to work. going to work is level ground or up hill (3 miles)coming home is an easy ride. I work as a chef so I’m on my feet all day, I found my legs were tiring by the end of the day. I used the hill topper for my trip to work when needed at the hills. I find my legs do not get tired at work any more. I have an old Norco screamer full suspension mountain bike which I’ll send pics of. had to go to Manitou shocks which still needed a bit of grinding to fit right. love the product, will be a fan forever

… well, almost. Very fast, anyway. What a joy it is now for my wife to ride up the hills and inclines near our house. We both are amazed at the acceleration of the Hill Topper, and the smile on my wife’s face says it all (you can’t see her smile, but trust me, she is very, very happy). Thank you Clean Republic, for building a great product at a competitive price. By the way, Beau has been great to deal with — please commend him for us. Kindest regards, The Sigsbees

James Miller (Northern California) 11/12/2013 11:52 AM
I use the Hill Topper with the small lithium batter on remote dirt roads for accessing the back country. I usually have a small pack on the handle bars, a larger pack on the rear rack and another pack on my back. Probably about 100 lbs of gear plus my 225 weight. I usually go about 4 plus miles (round trip) in moderately hilly terrain on dirt roads or paths. I peddle on the way in (about 2 miles) then just let the motor do all the work on the way home, no peddling at all. This uses about 85% of the battery capacity. I just purchased a second one for my granddaughter.

The real hill topper
Juni (Costa Rica) 11/9/2013 6:17 PM
There are many hills&rainy days in San Jose, Costa Rica. I put the pro-pack with 10mile-lithium-batt on my Trek mountain bike. It’s a real hill topper! It took 15 minutes without the kit on the uphill. Now, it takes only 8 minutes and I am not tired. Also, no problem in the heavy rain. Attach&detach of the batt on the bike is very easy for recharging. Parking the bike without the batt is good to prevent a stealing. I compared some e-bike kits and this kit is the best value for money in conclusion. Thank you.

Yesterday I took my old clunker bike out for a ride with my new HillTopper with lithium – 10 mile battery attached. I took a 20 mile round-trip ride uphill and downhill (our town is hilly). This is much more than I have ridden in the past. The bike operated far beyond my highest expectations, and there was still some power left in my battery when I finished. I am obviously not a bike “techie” and don’t fit a normal bike-riding profile. But with the HillTopper I plan to get a lot more biking in. Just for the record, I am 6’6″ tall, 215 pounds and 81 years old.

Love my hill topper bike kit. Could about 6 days to receive it through mail.
DM (Cordova, Tn) 11/30/2012 10:01 PM
Just received my hill topper bike kit. It was very easy to assemble and adjust the bike brake to accommodate the rim width. For all the ebikes and kits I saw, this kit was simple to install and affordable. I give it a 10 out of 10. I normally do not review products, but I am excited about this product. I have recently started biking with my 6 year old. I have a kids bike attachment that allows my son to trail behind and now pulling his weight, when he does not want to pedal, has made my biking experience more enjoy. Now my son can now relax when he does not want to pedal and I can use the hill topper to help me get up those hills. Thanks…

Another 1100 Miles and My Wife Too.
Jeffrey Arnold (Zenda, WI) 9/14/2012 10:45 AM
I have put another 1100 miles on my Hilltopper equiped bike so far this year. When I say 1100 miles, that means that the Hilltopper is on the bike, but actual miles with the button pushed is certainly less than 10% of that. I can just go and not worry about hills and/or wind. My wife was not able to ride for two years because of severe back problems. She got a hilltopper this spring and has been able to put in several hundred miles of riding with me. She is in love with her Hilltopper and in love with biking again. We have gone on two biking vacations this year riding Rail Trails that she would have found impossible without her Hilltopper. We use the SLA batteries and find this to be an affordable option for our use. I really like the option of just putting the Hilltopper on another bike. With very excellent help of Clean Republic’s customer service, I changed my Hilltopper from a 26″ wheel to a 700c wheel this spring. I even laced on the new rim with their help. It worked out great. Two local bike shops refused to do the job, as they know nothing of electric rims! I think they are going to miss out on the next big thing in cycling. Electric bikes are starting bring many more people into cycling. We could be happier. If it matters, I am almost 65.

Front wheel motor best choice!
Bill D (Robbinsdale, Minnesota) 7/14/2012 1:55 PM
I am extremely happy with my Hill Topper bike kit with the 20+ mile range lithium battery. I purchased this system because I work 6-8 hour shifts at a Trader Joe’s specialty foods market and by the time I’m ready to pedal my 9 miles home I’m bushed! Having electric assist means I can avoid overstressing myself during my commute. I’m also a very strong cyclist and part time bike shop employee who enjoys fast road bike riding and touring in my spare time, but need to have enough energy after work for mowing a nearly 2 acre lawn and enjoying my family. The system was easily installed in my Breezer Uptown with 7spd internal gears, a great durable bike perfect for bike commuting. I chose to purchase from Clean Republic because I wanted to insure great customer support and it turned out I did need some. Clean Republic had to replace my initial lithium battery because their supplier at the time sent them a bad lot of batteries. They now have a new supplier and the replacement battery is better made and is gives me a range of over 22 miles. I also lopped off the original “momentary” switch with one I liked better from Radio Shack. That cost me less than $4 at Radio Shack. You will need to soder on the new swich. My 9 mile (each way) commute time, including many stop signs and traffic lights, has gone from 70 minutes down to 40 minutes. I’ve also read that the average electrc bike gets the equivalent of over 1700 miles per gallon and my car is staying parked all the time now. I’ve used studded bicycle tires over 7 years to travel to/from work during Minnesota winters and already know the Hill Topper system with “front wheel drive” should be awesome. Realize that the system is essentially “all wheel drive” when I add my own power to the pedals! Anthony at CR is to be commended for his excellent customer service. If someone asks me, “Isn’t bicycling with a motor cheating?” I respond, “Driving a 4000 pound car to haul my 170lbs 9 miles at even 40 mpg is cheating and wasteful.

I am 53, not in bad shape, but found I made excuses for not riding my bike to work. It is a 7 mile round trip with a 3/4 mile hill at the end of about 500 ft elevation gain. On 90+ degree days and after a 12 hr shift I found I just wanted to drive, not ride. I did a little calculating, and figured the Hill Topper, though expensive, may pay for itself in a few years. The batteries (20 mile lithium) were on back-order so it took about a month to arrive. Install was easy. I have an old Panasonic touring bike that has 27 inch wheels. I had to file the drop out slightly for the wheel to fit, but it was only a few strokes with a 12 inch mill-bastard file. I had to adjust the brakes for the wheel size difference also. I bought the quick release for the wheel witch I really like. I have used the bike for about a month now. I use it virtually the whole commute except the downhill. I am riding in my 2nd from highest gear on the flats and not pushing hard on the pedals. I climb the long hill in my 3rd from lowest gear. I figure I am going about twice as fast with about half the effort on the climb. I have not challenged the range yet, as I have only used it on my commute, and recharge it every night. I plan on trying not charging it for a while to check the range soon. Overall, I love it. My hand gets a little tired because you must hold the button for power constantly, so you can’t move that hands position w/o the motor stopping. You also can’t use that hand to switch gears. I take the motor off and lock it in my locker at work, which adds a bit of hassle, ‘tho minor. I would definitely recommend the Hill Topper.

Performs as advertised
Marshal G (Bellingham, WA) 6/11/2012 6:52 PM
I recently installed the SLA Hilltopper kit on my Giant Roam2 bike and it pretty much does exactly what I expected. Installation is self explanatory, especially with the videos on the website. Performance wise I have no complaints. I can now ride comfortably up just about any hill in the area and only on the steepest hills do I even have to pedal hard, whereas previously I would have to get off and walk up. Of course everyone always wants more power and more speed but for a $400 kit that’s this easy to install it’s fine. Before the Hilltopper I could only get to some areas if I could put my bike up on the rack on a bus but now there’s nowhere in the city I wouldn’t ride. I already want to upgrade to the Lithium battery though, not so much for the extra range which is nice but the savings in weight.

I received my kit on Friday 4May and installed with no problems (had to buy 4 washers). Ease of install was a breeze, as advertised. I converted a very old Giant 10 speed mountain bike that I bought about 20 years ago. I spent the weekend putting the HT through it’s paces on the hilly streets of my neighborhood, and the toughest part of my ride home from work. It handled all challenges with no problems. Going up big hills is now like riding on flat ground. I am a 53yr old guy, 200lbs., and have been shying away from my bike as the hills had become too much for me to take. Now, I’m back in the game thanks to HT. My first ride into and home from work yesterday was a joy, and now I look forward to riding home instead of dreading it! I also have more confidence coming out of intersections, where a boost of speed can definitely help when you’re dealing with traffic. I also can now spend more time riding with the kids (14 & 12). They want a HT too, but I told them they can have one when they are my age! Update: 3 weeks into owning the HT, I am enjoying it more than ever. No problems or issues have been encountered. I much prefer riding my bike to driving in my car for most trips.

Since going ‘electric’, I’ve purchased a Bicycle hitch, (for our pickup). It has allowed us to take our bikes to western Colorado, Grand Mesa, ‘Buffalo Bill Days’ in Golden, Colorado, New Mexico and downtown Phoenix. I can park in places where I do not need ‘parking meter change’ anymore! Your products are simply; “A ‘Life style’ changer!”

Review from mid 50s man overweight but playing social tennis who was finding excuses to use the car for shortish local trips rather than his bike I have had the Hill Topper for a year now it was very easy to install and is still working fine had to replace the SLA batteries after I dropped them on the concrete garage floor. As I live in the UK picked up some standard SLA batteries designed for a disability scooter from e bay cheaply which I wired in easily and are working fine. The charger stooped working after six months but that was replaced quickly and without quibble under the warranty. Have done over a thousand miles, all in short round trips under 10 miles but with a couple of biggish hills (over a 100 ft elevation). In short it has replaced my car for any local trip I can climb the local hills easily and on a calm sunny day that is all I use it for but on a windy day it is used all the time gives huge flexibility and makes me want to use the bike. I know I should not gloat but it is good to overtake younger fitter riders with clearly more expensive bikes on a hill with panniers clearly full of shopping. What is bizarre is the comments I get from people, I have been accused of being lazy and cheating etc. by people all of whom have bikes but use cars for shortish trips. Would thoroughly recommend.

I’ve got over 650 miles on my Hilltopper now. Almost all of these miles would have been in my car without the Hilltopper. I can just go and not worry about the hills on my route or what the wind will be like when I come home. I have an 11 mile round trip every morning. Many days I don’t use the Hilltopper more than a couple tenths of a mile. Other days with a stiff wind, I may have it on for a mile or two. Hasn’t given me any trouble yet. Charges in less than two hours (SLA).

Got me back on my bike
Wayne B. (WA) 7/4/2011 11:04 AM
I gained weight and couldn’t do the 10 1/2 mile loop around our river. I purchased the 700cc SLA kit at a Seattle electric bike shop. It took me about 30 minutes to get the tire on and the cables wrapped the way I liked it. Now, my first day back on the trail, I did the whole loop with confidence. I pressed the button for all the big hills and on flat spots when I was winded, but wanted to keep the speed up. It felt like someone had a tow rope tied to the front of my Trek 700 and pulling me. This kit will take me @ 10mph on a flat spot, and will assist me on hills. There is no way it will pull me up a hill on its own, but it makes pedaling up a hill very manageable. I have lost about 10 pounds in a month of using this. My starting weight was 245lbs. This kit will not benefit anyone who is a bicycle athlete, because they will ride at faster pace than what this hub is built for. This kit has reintroduced me to a sport I use to love (my bike had been hanging in the garage for 2 years). Now I find I am getting more fit because I push that button less and less, which is a good thing! When my SLA battery eventually dies, I plan on upgrading to the lithium battery. Very highly recommended, even more so if you ever hesitate to get on your bike because of lack of motivation or being tired.

New Transportation
Glenn (Kansas) 6/29/2011 1:18 PM
When the economy is tough you have to think creatively. My daughter just turned 16, got her driver’s license and wants to drive. I wasn’t ready to purchase another car, but had $800 to come up with my personal transportation. I originally purchased a 50cc scooter that was easy on gas, fun to drive and a great deal. Since I go to work at 4 AM a headlight is essential, but after multiple times in the shop with a burned out headlight I could see this wasn’t working. That’s when research brought me to Clean Republic. I already had a Specialized bike, but because I’m a broadcaster I really can’t arrive at work out of breath – so, I converted my bike. To be honest I like riding this more than the scooter. My kids also refer to the conversion as a “sweet ride”. lol Yeah, a car is needed for many things, but for most commutes I don’t think I will miss the steering wheel at all. Oh, and if my son had his way I’d be buying a conversion for him, too. It’s only been a few days, but the initial reaction is welcome satisfaction. Secondly, I am enjoying seeing my town from a different perspective – the ride is extremely quiet.

I bought this product a few months ago, and am thrilled. I had polio as a child, and have a weakened left leg. I enjoy riding a bike, but hills, and strong winds really impeded my enjoyment. With the hilltopper I have no fear of hills or setting off cross country. I have a day 6 bike and the installation took about one hour, and I was riding. The hilltopper has made biking a real joy again. I am getting better workouts than in many years as I can keep my speed constant with the aid of the motor. Thanks.

I really like my kit. I was looking for something to help with a commute to work. I ride three miles to the METRO station. There are a number of hills and it is nice to be able to take them without huffing and puffing and sweating in my work clothes. It is also very fun at the shore where there are no hills. There, I can tool around almost without pedaling like it was a scooter. Best performance is to pedal from dead stop and then engage the motor. I did get the Lithium battery.

This kit is everything I expected and some more! I am using it only to commute 6 miles to my work each way. While pedalling as before, it increased my average speed by more than 50% (from 10 MPH to 16-18MPH) and cut my commute time significantly. While it may take a little more than 3 minutes to convert the first time (took me around 30 minutes), one nice feature which I think is not emphasized enough is that it can be converted back and forth from normal bike to power assist in less than 3 minutes by just switching the wheel and removing the battery. So no need to carry the extra weight if you want to do pure recreational biking.

day6 (FLA) 5/2/2011 11:52 PM
I’ve been using the hilltopper for a month now and it is perfect for my purposes. I ride a Day 6 semi recumbent in an area with many hills. The Day 6 is great but can be trouble on hills because the riding posture doesn’t allow you stand up and pedal. With the hilltopper as soon as I start to bog down I just push the button and I’m cruising up the hill like I’m on flat ground. I still have to pedal but that is fine I wasn’t looking for something to completely replace pedaling just an occasional boost when I need it. Some purist might view this as cheating but if it makes the difference between me using my bike vs. it collecting dust in the garage it can only be a good thing. I’ll admit I was a bit leery of the “e-bike” concept myself but after using it I’m a believer and I think everyone should have one because it makes your bike a *real* viable alternative to your car. I wouldn’t hesitate now to ride my bike across town just knowing I have the assist available makes all the difference. The 250W motor is “just enough” power get up a hill but not so much power that you can sit there and let the motor do all the work you still have to downshift and pedal and again that is fine with me. (It also might come in handy if you needed a quick boost to get away from danger like say you were getting chased by a dog.) My only real complaint is not with the product itself but with the price.. I hope you’ll be able to lower the price with volume because the sticker shock is probably turning away a lot of people from what is a really a great product.

Hello. This is my personal opinion and stance on this kit: I bought this kit to have some fun, try something new, and see if I can get to work just a little faster, and easier, and ride further distances (over 40 miles (one direction)) in a single day. I was absolutely amazed by how SIMPLE it was to install. I was a little confused about how the tire sat in the forks, but after looking at it for less than a minute, I pieced it together. I soon after just had some fun making the wheel spin without having the battery hoisted anywhere, and then I was sad and confused; The tire doesn’t spin that fast, but when it’s on the ground, it ZOOMS around (10 MPH! — What I usually cruise (leisurely)). I test road this against 20MPH head winds, and up hills, WITHOUT assisting the hub motor what-so-ever, and it still managed to maintain a brisk 8MPH pace, which is awesome, considering it’s only a 250-watt motor. Summary: Great kit. Cheap (SLA battery). Works for what it’s meant for. 🙂

I just received my Hill Topper 2 weeks ago. It has made my bike new again. Now, it is really fun to go up those hills. In this college town, this 53 year old “plus-size” woman loves showing the college boys just how cool I am going up those hills on my way to work! I usually made small trips to the store on my bike, but now I really love going. No dreading a hill climb or biking into the wind.

Bill Pratt (Columbia, MO) 3/23/2011 7:13 AM
My wife and I enjoyed riding bikes on the local “rails to trails” network until last year when her knee pain finally became too much for her. Looking around the internet for a lightweight and affordable electric assist conversion kit which I could install eventually led me to Clean Republic. We opted for the long range Li battery and “all in” the kit cost a little over $750. I was able to install it in an hour or so. It would have been less but I had to file the front forks to accommodate the hub, and reset the brakes for the new rim. My wife can’t get over how great it is and loves to demonstrate it to friends. The one issue I have seen in other reviews is the thumb switch to engage power. She hasn’t found that to be a problem because she uses power to get up to speed or climb a hill and then coasts or cruises with pedal power on the downhills and flats, so her thumb is never depressed for extended periods. This is best purchase I’ve made since we originally bought our TREK bikes in the first place.

I bought the Hilltopper to help get me to work. I have so far made a trial run to work 7.5 miles. It took me 40 minutes. Lots of stop lights and signs keep me from making better time. The Hilltopper helps alot going up inclines and I save the battery by coasting on the declines. I have a Schwinn 3 wheeler 26 inch wheels. I had no problem getting the wheel and battery installed. I also go to the local grocery store and local fast food places that I used to have to use my car. I am 52 and look forward to many years using the Hilltopper.

Attention Clean Republic: I recently purchased a “Hill Topper” assist for my bicycle. It works great for the purpose which I intended. I am 76 and have heart problems. This makes long uphills difficult to recover from. This is when I engage the assist. It works perfectly. Against a strong wind it is also very helpful. My wife and I bike with 3 other Medicare-age (plus) senior couples from 20 to 50 miles a week all summer. Normally I have no problems but the steep hills get my heart behind as there is no coasting or relaxing to recover. I weigh 240 (lost 30 pounds from 270 last summer while biking again!) so your product is well worth it’s purchase. Even on 20-mile rides I still have a lot of battery left at the end of the ride… perfect! I also appreciate the quick, no-hassle customer service. Thank you for an excellent product! -John

I purchased my hill topper kit as a full replacement for my car. It is mounted to my 2009 kona ute longtail. I bought the pro version and had my friend Peter lace the wheel for me. the kit works exactly as they say, and then some. I weigh 230 pounds, and my bike with the motor and battery is around 45 pounds. my commute to work is about 9 miles, and I can run the motor the whole way cruising at about 17 mph (i have a bontrager computer) with little pedaling effort and charge it up at work for the ride home, or if i am very judicious with motor use and work a little harder, i can get to work and back without charging, all with the basic battery. I have mounted the grip switch under the upshift lever on the left side, and with very light pressure, it engages, making it effortless to hold it down all the time. getting the hub on was pretty easy, I just had to file the dropouts a bit with a rat-tail file to remove the excess paint on the fork to get it on, took about 20 minutes in my dining room. My bike had disc front and rear brakes, and they wouldnt work on my motor, so i took my bike down to the local frame builder, Black Sheep Bikes, and the guys down there welded cantilever mounts on my fork for $30. An Avid caliper and lever was $20 at my LBS, and they put it on for free. works great, looks like it came that way from the factory. I might have gotten a bit gung-ho with this, and i understand CR has a disc compatable hub now, but I am super happy with the results. The guys at CR are the coolest. At first I ordered the wrong size spokes, they sent new ones right away, no charge. And then the cables got messed up on my wiring harness, causing the motor to turn on by itself. Not their fault at all, the screws came loose and I broke them I think, so I called and left a message about it. Less than an hour later, I was called by their customer service guy, who told me they would ship a new harness tomorrow. I was getting my credit card out when he said “no charge”.

Love My Ride-Battery Though Questionable
Steven Baker (Montrose, Colorado) 2/14/2017 2:34 PM
I have had my Hilltopper for about five years. I have severe COPD and unable to ride without assist except downhill or on flat. I live at 6,000 ft. in the mountains of Colorado. I love my bike when I have a good battery. Riding a few hundred miles per year around small town and when batteries are new they work well. I just lost two of the expensive 12 mi. range ones that died just after 1 yr. warranty so out something like $500. If you buy, dbl. check your battery condition continually (not just green light-ride the miles and clock them on t he flat, and be sure to send in for warranty as soon as you note a dip in mileage. My last one was still working for my short trips and then just died and I had not fully checked it out for some miles and was probably dying for some time with less and less miles left in it though green light on charger indicated good. Keep checking and send it in as soon as not performing as it should, otherwise you will be out of warranty period. The motors are not serviceable and have sealed bearings that cannot be serviced, thus when it begins grating and making odd noises, motor is failing or battery is weak. I lost one at only a few hundred miles but company replaced it. Love the bike when it works but the batteries have to start doing better. Without the bike my copd has essentially grounded me so will just have to grin and bear the cost of new battery. SB

I’ve had my hilltopper for 2 years with light usage and I had it stored 9 months without charging. i just used it today and it still has great charge capacity and runs great. I converted an old 6 speed beach cruiser (a heavy steel bike). It was an easy installation. It is difficult to see that the bike is electric which is great. I am 56 and this makes riding like I was a kid again. FUN! I would give it 6 stars if I could. I love the pure simplicity of this system and ten minute install. I bought the $599 12 mile pkg.

Great product!! Only some ‘minor’ issues: on/off switch on battery needs to take more effort to switch. Maybe recess it with a cover? Velcro strap on throttle button tends to slide around when on handlebars: simple fix is use a 1/2-inch hose clamp. This item really deserves a 10 Star rating!

Great for uphills
Larry (Minnesota) 6/30/2014 2:56 PM
I have the 10 mile battery. Going to my daughters is 14.5 miles. I use it for uphills and half the time on flat roads. Average speed of 12.4 miles an hour. biking without the hilltopper I would average 6.8 miles an hour. I carry about 25 pounds on the back rack. I ran out of power a block from my daughters house. I think because of the hills, the extra weight and going against the wind I only got about 7 miles. I really like the hilltopper a lot. Pedaling uphill requires very little effort to help the motor. It’s fun to ride. I’m going to buy the 20 mile battery soon. That will more than enough to get to my daughters house with the extra weight.

Ramy (California) 5/20/2011 12:36 PM

Dahon Expresso Folding Hill Topper

“I just installed your excellent hill topper on my 2006 Dahon Espresso 26″ folding bike. It delivers as promised and was an easy installation. I am very pleased with it. Now those few steep hills around my house will not keep me from enjoying some great rides and getting a lot of exercise.”
